Flossing Is Not Supposed To Be Painful, So Come See Us If It Is

It should be very understandable to become alarmed or nervous if you see blood in your mouth while brushing or flossing. Most people think when this happens that they need to brush or floss less, but in reality, the opposite is true.

When you see blood and you have pain when you floss, you need to be even more diligent in your daily routine of dental hygiene and more vigilant in daily brushing and flossing.

Ouch, It Hurts When I Floss

Your mouth is not supposed to hurt or bleed when you brush your teeth or floss, and if it does this is most generally an early sign of the gum diseases known as gingivitis whose symptoms include: swollen and red gums, tenderness on your gum line, bad breath, perhaps even receding gums and of course, blood in your spit after brushing and flossing.

No More Lame Excuses For Not Flossing

Flossing is most likely near the bottom of everyone’s to-do list, but it shouldn’t be. As discussed above if you don’t floss you are inviting some severe tooth decay and a world of hurt and a lot of expense to the dental chair. The lame excuse most people use to not floss is: “I don’t do it right.” Which is probably true.

Many people don’t floss correctly, but with a little help and once you start, your teeth start to feel so good and you stop your teeth feel icky if you stop. So, how do you floss correctly? You have got to really slide the thread of the floss on the tooth surface. Every time you push it between two teeth you’ve got to recollect that both teeth got to be cleaned. It is really that simple.

Another simple tip is don’t be afraid to use a lot of floss, use at least 18 to 20 inches and wrap most it around your middle finger. Remember, you are probably going to bleed a little, but that should stop within a week or two. Your gums are inflamed from all the bacteria that haven’t been flossed out, so you have to give it a little time.

We want you to be comfortable with your flossing and dental hygiene if you are experiencing any problems or just need some reassurance about how to really floss well or after a few weeks the bleeding and irritation have not stopped, by all means, we want you to call us right away and come in to see us so we can help get you on the right track and find out what is causing the problem and get your dental needs taken care of as soon as possible.
