Inlays & Onlays
Our experts here at Star City Dental are prepared to handle your inlays and onlays. Inlays and onlays are restorative alternatives that are used for your tooth repair. You don't need to worry about removing the decayed teeth that have partial or major cracks and fractures, because inlays and onlays are the best options for your teeth if there is enough healthy tooth to rule out the need to get a whole crown.
Benefits of Inlays & Onlays
Inlays are fit inside the cusp of your tooth, mostly, to replace the old filling. The onlay is also placed inside the cusp, but it extends outside to cover fractures and cracks on the crown over the cusps. After the old fillings are removed by our experts, the impression of the tooth is taken and sent to the laboratory. Here, the inlay and onlay are made as a mold to fit exactly structure of the damaged tooth for an instant and durable repair. When our dentists confirm that the mold fits perfectly, they initiate a bonding process using a very strong resin adhesive.
The inlays and onlays have come to replace the metal fillings that did not bond well with the healthy tooth and had a tendency to chip off. They are also preferable because they are made of materials that have the same color as your tooth. While metal fillings retained the color of their respective metals, inlays and onlays are made of either porcelain or other dental materials that look like your teeth. In other causes, inlays and onlays are made of gold or other composite resin forms of metals.
These restrictive alternatives strengthen your teeth and prolong the life of your teeth such that you may not require other forms of dental treatment afterward. The onlay and inlay procedure is simple, with very little discomfort that can easily be managed by taking mild painkillers. It takes about an hour for the dentist to complete the whole treatment.
Procedure for Inlays & Onlays
You will go through two appointments to complete the inlay and outlay treatment. The procedure for inlays and outlays are quite similar, where the first appointment involves using a local anesthetic to numb the area, and drilling to remove any damage or decay, after which the tooth is cleaned and prepared for the inlay or onlay.
Our professionals will make an impression with a tray full of dental putty which fits over your teeth. The dental inlay or onlay is created in the laboratory using the impression. The porcelain used to create the inlay or onlay will match the color of your teeth. Gold or composite resin can also be used to create the inlays or onlays. You will be given a temporary restoration by our professionals to protect your tooth until the next appointment as the inlay or onlay is being made in the laboratory.
