Dental Implants

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are titanium pieces that have an internal screw that holds a false tooth in place within the mouth. After we fit the implant, the bone will naturally grow around it and attach itself to the implant. One single implant can support one or multiple false teeth and can support a full or impartial set of dentures. Our dentist will assess how many implants are needed if you require more than one false tooth.

The process of getting dental implants fitting is not done in one session but usually over several months. Once inserted, and you have good oral hygiene, the implants will last as long as your natural teeth. Dental implants feel and perform just like your natural teeth as well as looking natural. Unlike dentures and bridgework, there is no need to shape the teeth around the implant for security.

Dental Implant Process

This process will vary depending on the patient, number of missing teeth, and the area of the implant. Be prepared for the whole procedure to take between three and nine months to complete. For more information, personalized to your needs, contact our clinic for more information.

If you decide dental implants are the option for you, the first thing our dentist will do is x-ray the mouth and check how healthy your gums and jaw are. If our dentist cannot see the position of nerves in the jaw, they may need you to take a CT scan.

The first step is placing the implant into your jaw and attaching the abutment; this will usually take one step. You will then have to wait for the implant to fuse with the surrounding bone; this can take between six weeks and six months. You may be offered temporary artificial teeth to wear during this fusing period. The last step is the construction and fitting on the new false teeth into the implant. Our dental technicians work closely with our dentists to construct a new artificial tooth, making it look as natural as possible.

Other stages that may be necessary but are not always are the possibilities of tooth extraction and bone grafting. If you have a problem with the tooth, it will have to be removed before it is replaced with an implant. If you don’t have enough bone in your jaw to support a dental implant, additional bone can be grafted from somewhere else on the body.

Most people have implants fitted in the clinic under local anesthetic, meaning you will be awake but not feel any of the pain. The procedure can be done in one step, but it may have to be spread across two steps with the implant rod buried under your gum while the bone heals.
