Cleanings

Woman talking to dentist during dental examFor our team here at Star City Dental, teeth cleanings are an important aspect of dental hygiene and protection. Oral health is more than just about having a perfect smile, it also has a strong impact on overall health. During regular check-ups with our dentist, you will find teeth cleanings being incorporated to remove any buildup of plaque.

When plaque is left unattended to it promotes tooth decays, gingivitis and eventually periodontal disease. Plaque and tartar cannot be removed with normal brushing and flossing of teeth. They are hardened deposits that require a tougher but careful removal, done by one of our professionals.

Importance of Teeth Cleaning

The most visually obvious benefit of teeth cleaning is the removal of plaque buildup and surface stains. You should be able to see immediate improvement after your cleaning. Your teeth should look whiter and brighter.

Normal brushing does not easily get to plaque deposits that buildup under the gum line. Through professional teeth cleaning, however, we can manage to reach into those hidden pockets and remove the plaque. This helps to strengthen the gums and reverse any recession. Weakened gums can lead to tooth loss, so helping them adhere better and cover the tooth is helpful.

Cleanings also provide our dentist with an opportunity to make an up-close examination of your oral cavity. If there are any likely signs of a serious ailment, such as oral cancer, this examination can prove useful in ensuring early detection. It can also provide a chance to identify teeth that may be in need of restorative treatment like crowns and fillings. If the problem is caught early, then the amount of restoration work needed can be minimal and help limit the future cost of having to restore your smile.

Medical research indicates that there is a strong link between gum disease and cardiovascular disease. Those that tend to develop gum disease are increasingly likely to suffer from heart attacks and stroke. Having twice-annual dental check-ups and cleanings can help keep your gums in good shape and reduce this risk. Your insurance cover usually covers these checkups and not taking advantage of the service could result in paying more money out of pocket in the future to fix what could have been a minor or preventable problem now.

Types of Cleanings

Routine cleaning is performed when your teeth are in relatively good condition and is done to maintain that good oral health. Plaque, tartar, and surface stains are removed during this procedure. It is advisable to have this done twice a year unless otherwise advised by our dentist.

Deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing, is carried out on you if there is a high risk of developing gum disease, or if it has already begun. To avoid tooth loss and monitor gum disease, we may recommend more frequent visits to the clinic.

Gross debridement is another cleaning procedure undertaken on patients who have stayed over a year without visiting our dentist. This appointment may take longer as the dentist may have a large amount of plaque buildup to remove and damaged teeth to treat.

Visit our clinic to find out which type of teeth cleaning you may require, and how to resolve any oral health concerns you may have. Call Star City Dental at (531) 220-0044 today and book an appointment.
