Dental Plaque – Causes, Symptoms, and PreventionEver noticed that sticky layer or film of bacteria on the teeth especially after you eat something sweet or starchy?

That film is dental plaque, which often makes your teeth feel kind of fuzzy and becomes highly noticeable when you don't brush your teeth.
Plaque develops on the teeth when you consume foods rich in starches and sugars, such as:

•  cakes
•  candy
•  soft drinks
•  bread
•  pasta
•  raisins

When these foods are left on the teeth for too long, the bacteria in the mouth feed on them and produce harmful acids as a result. If nothing is done about it, the acids destroy the tooth enamel, eventually leading to tooth decay.

Symptoms of Plaque

There are many symptoms or indicators of plaque such as:

•  fuzzy feeling on the teeth
•  swollen, tender, and red gums
•  chronic bad breath

How to Prevent Plaque Formation

There are many things you can and should do in order to prevent plaque formation on the teeth.

•  brush your teeth twice a day
•  floss at least once a day to eliminate food particles from between the teeth
•  rinse your mouth with an antibacterial mouthwash
•  follow a balanced diet
•  visit your dentist for a checkup after every 6 months

It is essential to note here that dental plaque might seem like a common occurrence, but if you don't do anything about it, you are likely to experience health risks such as cavities, tooth infection, severe gum infection, tooth decay, tooth loss, and periodontal gum disease.

If you happen to be dealing with dental plaque despite brushing and flossing your teeth regularly, book a consultation at Star City Dental where Dr. Melanie Fulton and Dr. Meghan Hungerford will help you treat it and suggest you appropriate tips for prevention.
