Everybody knows the importance of having a healthy smile. Poor dental health can lead to disease, both in the mouth and in the body. Maintaining proper dental hygiene is one good way to promote good oral health, but are there other ways?
Yes, there are! Having a healthy smile isn't just about taking care of your mouth by brushing and flossing twice every day. It's much more than that!
The Role of Food for a Healthy Smile
The foods we eat play a vital role in the health of our mouth. Plenty of fruits and vegetables are a great way to promote oral health. Some of the best fruits and vegetables, however, are crunchy. This is because crunchy fruits and vegetables, like apples and raw celery, help remove bacteria from your teeth. Apples also have the added benefit of freshening your breath! Other good fruits and vegetables include raw carrot, raw broccoli, and strawberries.
Besides fruits and vegetables, there are other foods which are good for your oral health. One such food is cheese. Many people associate cheese with strong bones, and while it's true the calcium in cheese is good for your bones, it's also good for your teeth. Cheese has a neutral pH level, which means it doesn't wear away at your teeth like other foods.
What's more is cheese actually protects your teeth against acidic foods. This is because cheese likes to cling to your teeth. This creates a cheese barrier that is resistant to the acids in other foods. Cheese also helps to neutralize the acids in other foods so it's great to have at the end of a meal.
